Husband and Wife team, Ed and Beth O’Hara, along with family and friends, own and operate Ed’s Country Bakery (http://www.edscountrybakery.net). The bakery is located on the O’Hara Family Dairy Farm, just off of route 340 and Mt. Zion Rd, in Frederick.
Ed does most of the baking, while Beth specializes in the business and marketing side of the bakery. Beth is the face of the business whom you meet at the market selling cupcakes, breads, cookies and wonderful cakes. Their shop – which one customer said she frequents because “it’s like a good old fashioned bakery”---has a storefront with cases of tempting goodies. They also sell all-natural beef from the farm at the shop that is pasture raised and grain finished, without hormones or antibiotics.
“We buy everything for our baking locally if we can,” Ed says. “We support other vendors at the farmer’s market by buying produce from them for our baked goods.” He is also committed to high-end ingredients, like the butter creams that are made from scratch—they use almost 50 pounds of butter a week!
Whether at the storefront, or at the Market, the O’Hara’s take custom orders for wedding, anniversary and special occasion cakes. They are sometimes called on by parties held at Dutch’s Daughter Restaurant to provide custom cakes.
Ed’s parents are happy one of their four children has stayed on the dairy farm, albeit as a baker! The couple is living their dream, especially Ed, who says he first thought about being a pastry chef, and a bus driver, in kindergarten---and he drives a bus part-time on the side as well!
